Day 2: Work - 5 Prayers for Anxious Educators

Day 2: Work

Happy New Year, Educators! One of my favorite things about being a teacher is getting to celebrate a fresh start every Fall. However, given everything we’ve lived through in education within the last two years and given the unpredictability of the year ahead, it isn’t hard to believe that one might not have such a joyous disposition as we enter into the new school year. With COVID and class sizes, learning gaps and the lack of grace, stressed out families and burnt out educators, anxiety may have found a place in your mind and heart. If so, this blog series is for you. This week I will be sharing five prayers for educators to lean on throughout the year, one for each day of the week (this is day 2, click here to check out Day 1!). Each prayer is powerful, NOT because of any words I wrote, but because of the Word they are based upon. Below are the five scriptures that are the foundation for each prayer. Today’s prayer focuses on our work. We know the work of our hands and heart have the potential to heal or harm so we must act wisely. Meditate and reflect on the Word as you continue to use it to find strength throughout the year as you do what you do best: Pray. Teach. Repeat. <3

Dear God of the Exhausted Educator,
Thank you so much for the gift of work and for the realization that it IS a gift. I know you can run the whole world without me, yet you have chosen to give me a part to play in it. Thank you for the opportunity to work alongside you on your greatest masterpiece: people. Let me find joy in the work you have set out for me to do. Enable me to work enthusiastically, with all my heart, as I know that I work for You and not for mankind. Please, let Your favor rest on me when it comes to the work you have planned for me to do. Strengthen me for the journey you have set out before me. Empower me to reject the lies of busyness, being burdened and burnt out. When the workload feels too heavy or hindersome, help to rest. Remind me to find peace in knowing that You ordained rest as good and holy. Let me find encouragement in recalling that I am YOUR workmanship and that all the work you do is GOOD! Ultimately, Lord, let my light shine so that others may see You and know You through all that I do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

5 Foundational Verses

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-34 NIV

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.” Psalm 90:17 NIV

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 ESV

“They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share…” 1 Timothy 6:18 ESV

““You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”- Matthew 5: 14-16 ESV
