Day 1: Speech - 5 Prayers for Anxious Educators

Day 1: Speech

Happy New Year, Educators! One of my favorite things about being a teacher is getting to celebrate a fresh start every Fall. However, given everything we’ve lived through in education within the last two years and given the unpredictability of the year ahead, it isn’t hard to believe that one might not have such a joyous disposition as we enter into the new school year. With COVID and class sizes, learning gaps and the lack of grace, stressed out families and burnt out educators, anxiety may have found a place in your mind and heart. If so, this blog series is for you. This week I will be sharing five prayers for educators to lean on throughout the year, one for each day of the week. Each prayer is powerful, NOT because of any words I wrote, but because of the Word they are based upon. Below are the five scriptures that are the foundation for each prayer. Today’s prayer focuses on our speech. We know just how powerful our words can be and need to pray that we wield that power wisely. Meditate and reflect on the Word as you continue to use it to find strength throughout the year as you do what you do best: Pray. Teach. Repeat.

Dear God of the Exhausted Educator,

Please help me to keep my speech sweet as honey when talking to my students, my peers, my families and especially...myself. Give me the discipline to season my speech with kindness, gentleness, peace, patience, love, joy, and grace. Guide my tongue and my words. Help me to escape the black holes of gossip, negativity, frustration and anger. Set a guard over my mouth when I am tempted to use my words in ways that satisfy my flesh, but disappoint the Spirit. Help me to use my words wisely in my daily encounters. Enable me to empower, encourage, educate and edify those you send across my path. Let my words speak life, not death. Help my words to reflect the work you’re doing in my life and the worth that I and others have as your children. Thank you in advance for all the trouble that shall escape me when I choose to restrain my tongue instead of letting it rule me. Let your Words resonate within me and reverberate from me. In Jesus’ name.
